Louisiana Speeding Fines: Limits and Penalties

Updated October 2, 2026.

The cost of a Louisiana speeding ticket depends on the law charged, the court handling it, the alleged speed, and the circumstances. A statewide chart of $115, $215, or $240 cannot reliably tell you the total due. Start with your citation and the responsible court’s current information.

The posted limit and conditions both matter

R.S. 32:64 requires a reasonable and prudent speed for the conditions and compliance with applicable maximum speeds. A general description of interstate speed limits does not give permission to drive 75 mph on every interstate. Read the signs for that road and adjust for hazards, weather, and traffic.

For your ticket, record the posted limit, alleged speed, location, and statute or ordinance. The court needs those details to identify the charge and available resolution procedures.

State penalty limits are not the total bill

R.S. 32:57(A)(1) generally provides up to a $175 fine, up to 30 days’ imprisonment, or both for a first covered violation, unless another provision applies. It provides up to $500, up to 90 days, or both for a subsequent violation. Court costs and other applicable assessments are separate from those fine figures.

Those general limits also have exceptions. R.S. 32:57(H) specifies a $500–$1,000 fine for qualifying speeding or zone-breach conduct in active construction or utility work zones when workers are present. Subsection I separately addresses designated highway safety corridors. The charge and facts determine which provision applies.

How to get a reliable amount

  • Our team identifies the court and charged offense.
  • We assess the applicable penalties, costs, and appearance requirements.
  • We review defenses and any available negotiated resolution.
  • We explain the proposed outcome and the work covered by our fee.

For example, Baton Rouge City Court publishes its own payment instructions. That court’s process should not be used for a ticket assigned to another court. There is no universal $2-per-mile formula for all Louisiana cases.

Other allegations must be checked separately

School-zone, seat-belt, child-restraint, phone-use, insurance, and equipment allegations can involve different laws and procedures. If several charges appear on one citation, ask for the amount and required response for each. A malfunctioning police computer does not establish a legal discount or eliminate court costs.

Consider the disposition before paying

Payment may resolve the case through a guilty or no-contest disposition. Ask about that effect before paying if you intend to contest the allegation or seek an available diversion option. Louisiana does not use numerical license points, but convictions can still affect your record and licensing.

A qualifying court-approved course under Article 892.1 may be an option in some cases. Eligibility, approval, cost, and completion conditions must be confirmed. There is no guaranteed record clearance simply because a driver buys a course.
