How to Resolve Old Louisiana Traffic Tickets

Updated October 15, 2026.

An old Louisiana traffic ticket needs a review of the court history. Its age alone does not establish whether a case, warrant, balance, or license issue remains. Our attorneys investigate the record and assess the available defense or resolution.

Start with the case and the license separately

  • Gather the citation, old receipts, court correspondence and any OMV notice. If papers are missing, note the approximate date and location.
  • Identify the court and ask about the current case status, rather than relying only on an online payment search.
  • Have any reported warrant, missed appearance or disputed deadline reviewed against the actual court record.
  • Check any separate license restriction through OMV. A court payment does not establish that every administrative issue is resolved.
  • Keep the final disposition and proof of compliance for each requirement.

Use the city directory and official court resources to identify the right office. See how to check a license restriction if an OMV notice is involved.

We identify the case and its history

Send us the citation, notice, OMV letter, or receipt you have. If the paperwork is missing, tell us the location and approximate date. Our team uses the available information to investigate the matter; an empty online payment search is not proof of dismissal.

  • Citation date, alleged offense, and location.
  • Case number and the office maintaining the record.
  • Charging documents and their filing dates.
  • Scheduled hearings, notices, and any missed appearance.
  • Plea, judgment, sentence, or dismissal already entered.
  • Warrant status, outstanding balance, and OMV reporting.

Have the deadlines checked against the record

Louisiana has separate rules for beginning a prosecution and starting a trial. Code of Criminal Procedure Article 572 generally sets a two-year institution period for a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment and a six-month period for a misdemeanor punishable only by a fine or forfeiture, subject to applicable exceptions.

Article 578 generally sets a one-year period to begin a misdemeanor trial after prosecution is instituted. That is not a promise that every ticket expires one year after the stop. The charge and procedural history control the analysis.

Article 579 addresses interruptions, including a failure to appear after actual notice established in the record. Article 580 addresses suspensions for specified procedural events. An attorney should review the actual dates, notices, and filings before asserting that a prosecution is time-barred.

We assess warrants and missed appearances

Our attorneys review a reported warrant and the court’s orders before recommending the legal response. Payment alone does not necessarily recall a warrant or replace a required appearance. The court’s actual order controls.

A missed appearance can also create an OMV issue under R.S. 32:57.1. Court resolution and license compliance should both be checked. If you believe your license is restricted, check your current license status before driving.

Understand the proposed resolution before paying

We evaluate the proposed plea or disposition, any remaining charges, and available hearings or approved programs. A receipt proves payment; it does not necessarily establish dismissal or removal of a conviction.

If a court record is difficult to locate, our review may require archived records and comparison with the OMV entry. Missing records do not automatically erase a reported conviction.

We review the final result and related documents

  • Final disposition for each charge.
  • Proof of any fine, cost, or program payment.
  • Written order addressing a warrant, when applicable.
  • Proof of required court reporting or release.
  • Confirmation of any remaining OMV reinstatement step.
