An I-10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge Ticket: What Drivers Need to Check

By

If you received a ticket on the I-10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, be careful with older articles about its special speed-camera program and penalties. Louisiana repealed the bridge-specific camera and penalty provisions in 2024. That change did not remove ordinary traffic enforcement or make a police-issued citation invalid.

The useful starting point is your actual ticket: the charge, recorded speed, posted limit, location, court, and response date. Those details matter more than a penalty figure copied from a story about the bridge’s former rules.

What changed in 2024?

Car and truck speed limitsDOTD announced 60 mph for all vehicles on July 9, 2024, replacing the previous 55 mph truck limit. The applicable signs at the place and time of the allegation, including any temporary work-zone limit.
Truck lane restrictionDOTD said trucks remain restricted to the right lane.Whether the ticket alleges a lane violation, speeding, or both.
Special bridge camera and penalty provisionsAct 127 repealed former R.S. 32:57(J) and 32:268, effective August 1, 2024.The law actually charged and the date of the alleged offense.
Speed feedback signsDOTD installed signs displaying a motorist’s speed.A feedback display is not itself proof that a mailed camera ticket was issued.

The enacted repeal removed the former bridge designation and its associated camera, sign, and penalty provisions. The bill history confirms the August 1, 2024 effective date. Do not confuse that former subsection J with a later subsection carrying the same letter in the current statute.

DOTD’s July 9, 2024 announcement expressly said Louisiana State Police and local law enforcement would continue issuing citations. A repeal of special bridge provisions is therefore not a blanket defense to an officer’s speeding allegation.

Read the alleged speed and applicable limit together

Compare the speed written on the citation with the limit it identifies. If it records a lower limit than the ordinary 60 mph bridge limit, determine whether it describes a temporary construction limit or a different location. Save the exact direction, mile marker, date, and time. A photograph from another stretch of I-10 does not establish the signs at the alleged location.

For work-zone conditions, use DOTD’s official road and lane announcements to identify the relevant project and dates. An announcement can help reconstruct what work was planned; it does not necessarily prove which signs or workers were present at the moment of a stop. Preserve any contemporaneous evidence you already have.

Identify the court rather than the nearest payment page

Keep the full court designation from the ticket, along with its citation number and assigned date. An I-10 stop is not automatically a municipal case in the nearest town. If you cannot read the court line, contact the issuing agency for clarification and then verify the receiving court’s instructions independently.

Ask whether your particular charge is eligible for payment without appearing and what that payment will resolve. Revised Statute 32:57 includes payment procedures but also exceptions, including allegations of at least 15 mph over the limit and certain other offenses. Do not read an online payment button as a promise that every charge can be handled the same way.

Keep useful evidence without creating another roadside hazard

  • Retain the citation, any mailed notice, and later court correspondence.
  • Save an existing dash-camera recording before it is overwritten.
  • Write down the recorded location, direction, weather, visibility, and temporary traffic controls while your memory is fresh.
  • Preserve relevant DOTD announcements with their dates; distinguish planned work from conditions you personally observed.
  • Obtain a case-specific amount and appearance instruction from the named court, and keep the confirmation.

Do not stop on a bridge shoulder or enter a closed work area to collect photographs. Evidence that can be gathered safely and lawfully is more useful than creating a new incident. For a work-zone speeding allegation, review the specific charge and worker-presence conditions separately from ordinary speeding.

Get the ticket reviewed before its deadline

A bridge citation may involve ordinary speeding, a truck-lane restriction, a work-zone allegation, or more than one charge. Send our team both sides of the ticket and any later notice so we can identify the applicable court process and discuss representation. If the date has passed, begin with the current case-status checks for a missed court date.
